Wednesday i drove to the robert frost stone house museum in shaftsbury vermont about 100 miles south at the southwest corner of the state. With sugar maple making up close to 20 of total growing stock of our forest it is little wonder why it is vermont s state tree. Yellow birch sugar maple american beech eastern hemlock and white pine dominate shading hobblebush several species of ferns shining clubmoss and many species of fungi. Of these sugar maples are probably the most common. The three most common hardwoods here are sugar maple beech and yellow birch.
